Toinette Katherine Piccinich, 19, of Huntsville, was killed when the vehicle she was driving, a gray Toyota Carola, was struck broadside by a speeding Chevy Impala that failed to stop at a red light at the Jordan Lane, Mastin Lake Road intersection. The accident occurred at around 8:15 p.m. Ms. Piccinich was pronounced dead at the scene.
19-year old Christopher Wayne Ross has been charged with manslaughter and leaving the scene of the accident and faces up to 30-years in prison. Ross who is alleged to have been driving while intoxicated and speeding, is currently in the Madison County Jail on $75,000 bond.
The severity of the crash caused Ms. Piccinich’s Toyota to careen into a third car causing that driver to be seriously injured as well.
Police at the scene said that after the crash, Ross attempted to flee on foot. Eyewitnesses to the accident became involved by chasing and detaining Ross until the police arrived.
As with all drunk driving cases in Alabama, another important issue to consider is where Ross purchased and drank the alcohol that caused his intoxication. Alabama is a Dram Shop state therefore individuals, bars, restaurants and others can be held responsible for causing the intoxication of a another person.
