60-year old Stephen Evans, of Ninth Avenue Southeast in Decatur, was killed in a two-vehicle accident in the early morning hours of Friday, October 8, 2015.

The accident was caused by the reckless driving behavior of 39-year old Kristy Hopkins of Arab. Decatur police Lt. Roger Huntzinger said calls to police immediately before the wreck reported the Tahoe was driving erratically. Hopkins’ Tahoe later crossed into the southbound lane and collided head-on with the Evans’ Optima which was heading northbound on Alabama 67. Hopkins was taken by helicopter to Huntsville Hospital with serious injuries.

There are any number of reasons why a person would drive recklessly not the least of which is being under the influence of drugs and alcohol. While the incident in question above is currently under investigation, it is worth noting that killing another person in a motor vehicle accident whether or not you are charged with driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol is a serious crime with life changing consequences.
