Dvonte Obryon Conerly, 22 of Huntsville was arrested after being involved in a “hit and run” automobile accident at memorial Parkway and University Drive, Wednesday August 26, 2015. In addition to the hit and run charges, Conerly was charged with two counts of second-degree assault for fighting with the officers trying to make the arrest. He was also charged with third-degree domestic violence from an outstanding domestic violence warrant for his arrest. Conerly had fled the scene of the accident prior to being captured by police.
As we have previously stated here, hit and run automobile accidents are among the most grievous motor vehicle-related crimes one can commit. Many times the injured victim, be they pedestrians or passengers in another vehicle, are in desperate need of medical attention and every second counts. An automobile accident can turn from simply injuring someone to actually killing someone unless you take the required steps to help save the injured person’s life. Here’s a few suggestions on what you need to do if you are involved in an automobile accident and someone has been injured.
The first thing you need to do is to call 911 and get an ambulance to the scene. No question about it. Everyone has a cell phone with them these days (probably talking on it at the time of the accident ), and there is no excuse for not immediately dialling this emergency number.
The second thing you can do after calling 911 is to not leave the scene. Leaving the scene of an accident is a serious crime and can directly contribute to the death of another person.
Thirdly, if the passengers are in need of immidiate first aid, do whatever is necessary to stop the injured party from bleeding to death by tying a tourniquet around an arm or leg above the site of the wound, or apply pressure directly to a bleeding torso wound.
You are not required to be a hero, and most of the time the injured party is better off if you do not move them if they are unconscious. If you immediately called 911, professional medical help should arrive quickly.
