83-year old Laura Flannagan of Colbert County was killed when the car in which she was a passenger crashed into the rear of an 18-wheeler hauling grain. Ms. Flannagan was airlifted from the scene of the accident to Huntsville Hospital by Air Evac. The accident happened around 5:00 pm Monday on Alabama 20. Both vehicles were heading west.
The driver of the car, 51-year old Calvin Flannagan was taken by ambulance to Helen Keller Hospital and his condition is unknown.
The 18-wheeler was driven by Brian Barkley, 38, Town Creek who was uninjured in the crash.
While the details of the accident are under investigation, one wonders why the 18-wheeler was stopped along side of the highway allowing a potential accident to happen in the first place.
