While it may appear that driving an SUV is safer for your family than driving a regular automobile, statistics show that SUVs are more prone to single vehicle rollover accidents than automobiles. SUV’s have a narrow wheel base and when one considers their height and higher center of gravity it makes them “top-heavy” and prone to rollover accidents. Rollover accidents are the leading cause of traumatic brain injury and death in the US of all SUV-related accidents.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, SUV’s have more than double the chance of being involved in a rollover accident than a regular passenger automobile. The leading cause of rollover accidents is not when a driver loses control due to sudden movements or curves, but due to striking a low object like a curb or a ditch and flipping over.
SUV’s are more than twice as likely to flip over when trying to avoid an animal in the road, or when a driver falls asleep at the wheel.
In order to make your SUV travel more safe there are a number of things you can do to be more prepared. Make sure you have checked the tire air pressure and tire treads at least once per month. Wearing a seatbelt can prevent you from being thrown from the vehicle in the event of a rollover. And of course do not speed, text, or drink and drive when operating your SUV.
