Injured in an Auto Accident – Here’s What You Need To Do
When you get hurt in a car accident, it’s hard to think clearly. As a result, many drivers make mistakes that limit their chances of getting full compensation for their injuries. Aside from calling a car accident lawyer right away, below are other things you should keep in mind to protect yourself and your interests:
Stop.
Even if the accident is a minor one, it would be best not to leave the scene.
Protect the scene.
There are many ways you can prevent further damage. For starters, you can keep your flashers on or set up flares. If it is dark and your lights are not working, use a flashlight while waiting for the authorities to arrive.
Call the police.
Even if your injuries are not serious, you should call the police. You will need a police report to file a claim with the insurance company in some cases.
Keep an accurate record.
When the police arrive, tell them exactly what happened. If you are unsure about certain information, make sure you also inform them. Do not guess, misstate, or speculate any of the facts.
If asked if you are injured and you are unsure, say you are unsure rather than telling them no. There are instances when the injuries and pain from vehicle accidents will only manifest after a few hours or days.
Take pictures.
If there is visible damage to your vehicle, document them through pictures accordingly. If you or the people with you have visible injuries, make sure you take pictures as well.
Report the accident.
You also need to inform your insurance company as soon as possible as some policies require immediate reporting and full cooperation.
Seek medical attention.
Some injuries are not apparent immediately. There are instances when those involved will only feel pain a day or two after the accident. Unless you are certain that you have no injuries, you should seek medical attention right away.
